Legalism the scourge of Adventism - Part 8 -- Traditions of Men -- Are we to uphold or abhor the traditions of men?
"There are many workers in the cause who are not properly equipped for this great work, and when they are given some measure of success, they are in danger of becoming elated and self-sufficient. They work in their own strength, and do not discern their danger, and therefore, do not avoid the perils that are in their pathway. Erroneous ideas will be brought into the work, and presented as a part of the truth to the people; but everything that God has not connected with the truth will only serve to weaken the message and lessen the force of its claims. Satan is constantly seeking to divert the mind from the real work to a spurious work; and those who have but little experience in the dealings of God, are in danger of becoming bound about with overstrained notions, and of holding ideas similar in character to those which bound the Jews in the days of the Saviour's sojourn with men. The rigorous exactions of the Pharisees, the heavy yokes of the traditions of men, made of none effect the commandment of God, and the work of Christ was to free the truth from the rubbish of error and superstition, that men might behold the true character of God, and serve him in spirit and in truth. R&H May 29, 1888.2
Those who proclaim the truth for today have a similar work to do." IBID
It is not by compromising truth and promoting the popular ERRORS and TRADITIONS OF MEN, that truth advances and is upheld. Rather reprove and protest! Here is an example of it: "MR. EDITOR: I take the liberty to express something of my feelings and gratitude to God for sending his messengers to Lodi to proclaim the third angel’s message, which proved a powerful eye-salve to open the eyes of my understanding, showing me that I was building my faith more upon the teachings and traditions of men than upon the word of God. I saw that I was breaking the Sabbath, and thus trampling upon God’s law, which is holy, just and good, and which his holy Son came not to destroy, but to magnify and make honorable. Being convinced of this truth, I was condemned, of course, and what could be done? I saw no remedy only to turn my eyes to Jesus our great High Priest as my atonement, and at the same time turn my feet from off the Sabbath, from doing my pleasure upon that holy day. There were quite a number that covenanted to keep the Sabbath at the same time I did, at a social meeting in the tent, the last Sabbath the brethren were here, and I will say for their encouragement, that nearly all that then started are holding on, and going on their way rejoicing to mount Zion. The Lord has been very good to us since we received this message. Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, Nov. 27, 1860 pg 15.4
For the last three weeks that have passed, surely with blessings we have been blessed. Bro. Sanborn has been with us the most of the time, laboring zealously in word and doctrine. During the time a table has been spread out before our craving souls, loaded with rich Bible truth, which we gladly feasted upon. We have also had the pleasure of listening to Bro. Ingraham two evenings, and hope to hear more from him on his return from the conference. I have long professed to be an ardent lover of my Bible, but I must admit I have seen it only as a dim light shining in a dark place in comparison to the glorious light I now see beaming from every page. With the Psalmist I feel to exclaim, “Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me bless his holy name,” for such a Book, so full of beauty, so lovely, and so just and reasonable. And again I bless his name that my eyes have been opened to behold so much of its truths. God bless the labors of his messengers, and add to their number, for the harvest is great but the laborers few.
Your sister in faith,

What counsels and warnings have been given in regards to TRADITIONS of MEN? "Satan, the apostle, the rebel against the government of God, has proposed to obliterate the fourth commandment, which brings to view the Creator of the heavens and the earth, and, instead of the Sabbath, he designs to cause all men to honor a common working day. God blessed the seventh day, he rested upon it and sanctified it for man's observance, but Satan is determined to set aside the claims of the Sabbath, and cause men to accept a spurious sabbath. The excuse for refusing to observe the Sabbath of God's appointment is often made that it does not make any difference upon which day we rest, so long as it is one day in the seven. But it makes every difference upon which day you rest. Resting upon the day God commanded reveals the fact that you honor the Maker of heaven and earth; but disregarding that fact makes it evident that you do not honor God or obey his commandment to “remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.” Your non-observance of the memorial of creation shows that you place no merit upon the day that has been sanctified and blessed, and think that you will be excused if you observe the day that has been appointed by the Papacy, which has exalted itself above God and all that is worshiped. The Signs of the Times, January 08, 1894.Parg.7
You accept a common working day instead of the day that has been sanctified and blessed, but in thus doing you offer positive insult to the God of heaven. In holding to an observance commanded by the Papal Church, you exalt the opinions and traditions of men above the commandments of the God of heaven. IBID
The Lord understood in just what lines the enemy would work in seeking to tear down his memorial, thus destroying from the minds of men the reminder of his creative work and rest. But to his children he has given this message,—that the Sabbath shall have such significance in their eyes that they will not be moved away from obedience to his requirements: “Speak thou also unto the children of Israel, saying, Verily my Sabbaths ye shall keep; for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations; that ye may know that I am the Lord that doth sanctify you.... It is a sign between me and the children of Israel forever; for in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested, and was refreshed.” “And hallow my Sabbaths; and they shall be a sign between me and you, that ye may know that I am the Lord your God.” IBID.
"By the words, “Let them alone,” Christ did not mean that His followers were to make no effort to correct their untruthful doctrines. He was charging His disciples to enter into no controversy with them. “Let them alone,” He said. Do not be indignant because they set aside My words. They are blind, and blind men can not see. They are leaders of the blind. They have an influence, and many believe their assertions. But because they do not open their understanding to the Word of God, they walk in darkness. If I tell them that they have no foundation for their tradition, and show them truth in contrast with error, they will not believe Me. It is not evidence of the truth they want; they want an excuse for holding to their traditions. The Signs of the Times, January 03, 1900 Parg. 9
To Peter, who had imbibed the teachings of the Pharisees, the words of Christ seemed new and strange. He said to Christ, “Declare unto us this parable. And Jesus said, Are ye also yet without understanding? Do not ye yet understand, that whatsoever entereth in at the mouth goeth into the belly, and is cast out into the draught? But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart; and they defile the man. For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications, thefts, false witness, blasphemies; these are the things which defile a man; but to eat with unwashen hands defileth not a man.” IBID
The teachings of Christ were just what the nation needed to save them from eternal ruin. He taught them pure requirements. He showed that no man who has not first offered himself to God as a living sacrifice, who is not a fit temple for the Holy Spirit to dwell in, is fit for the service of God. He taught that purification of life and character could be obtained only through Christ. They could discern heavenly things only by becoming partakers of the divine nature, by laying hold of the light and power and knowledge that He was bringing within their reach. IBID
Were Jesus personally teaching in our world today, we should hear from His lips the same truths. If we will submit to the working of the Holy Spirit, God will make us partakers of the divine nature. Only by walking according to the commandments of God can we be clean. IBID

What may we expect in the near future? "The opposing forces of truth and error are still ranged against each other to-day; for the contest is not yet ended. To-day the same power that opposed Wycliffe stands glorying in its might, trusting even that all the world will yet bow in worship at its feet. It is holding forth the word of the mortal being whom it has pronounced “infallible,” with the commandments and traditions of men, as superseding the precepts of God. Nor does it flatter itself without reason, in human judgment, for all the world is looking upon it in wonder and admiration; all nations are working to confirm its decrees. In particular, that power is the Papacy; but in general, it is any earthly power, papal or Protestant, which clings to the evil principle of trust in the word of man. The American Sentinel, Feb. 27, 1896 pg.65.5,6,7.
The issue is joined to-day for a decisive combat. God’s Word declares, “The seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God; in it thou shalt not do any work.” On the other hand, the word of man—traditions church precept, and the civil “law”—declares the first day to be the Sabbath. The first-day sabbath is Rome’s heralded token of the supremacy of her word in spiritual things; and in anticipation of her long-awaited triumph, she says in her heart, “I sit a queen, and am no widow, and shall see no sorrow.” She is stretching forth her hand to seize again her long-lost supremacy on earth. But in the heavens a mandate has gone forth, “It is time for thee, Lord, to work; for they have made void thy law.” IBID
The dramatic scenes of Wycliffe’s time are to be reënacted. The champions of divine truth are again to stand before kings and rulers; the word of the Infinite is again to be seen towering in divine majesty above the precepts of mortal man. The triumphs of truth in every age culminate here. We have reached the climax of the great controversy. Over the issue of which day is the Sabbath—which of the signs of two opposing spiritual powers is to be given the honor of men—the battle will be fought to its conclusion. On the one hand stands the Sabbath of the Lord, the seventh day,—the sign of the Godhead of Him whose word has creative power; and on the other hand is the man-made sabbath—Sunday—the sign of that opposing power which has set its word above the word of the most High, claiming the right to change the Sabbath from the seventh day to the first. On that side and under that banner will stand all who, whether Catholic or Protestant in name, have given real or apparent assent to this change. In many places this assent is now called for by the civil law; but the word of the Creator upholds a different institution, and demands allegiance to it. Shall we choose Scripture? or tradition?—the word of God? or the word of man? The choice will determine our position in the conflict, and our final destiny." IBID
Are we any better, if we disregard the commandments of men? "But hold! You are not doing as well as they; for they lived in harmony with all that they knew of God’s requirements, and this you are not willing to do. Before the Reformation started, the good men who afterward espoused its cause were in the Church of Rome, holding and practising its erroneous doctrine; and from that day to this there has been a continuous unfolding of Divine truth which had been covered up by the rubbish of Romish traditions and dogmas; for the Reformation was not all accomplished in the days of Luther, but is yet going on in the proclamation of the Bible Sabbath, and in calling the attention of men to God’s word as the only infallible guide in all matters of Christian faith. The same issue is joined to-day that brought the conflict then; viz., the Bible against tradition, but-the power of God’s word against the power of man. The Present Truth, Vol. 10, April 12, 1894, Pg.232, parg.2,3
But again; the Christian must not look to man, but only to God. The life of Christ is the example by which he is to shape his own life. Christ speaking through the prophet said, “Look unto Me and be ye saved, allthe ends of the earth” (Isaiah 14:22), and we are exhorted further to “run with patience the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus the Author and Finisher of faith.” Hebrews 12:1, 2. To whom, then, are you looking? Whatsoever is not in the life of Christ does not belong to Christianity; and whatsoever is in that life should be accepted by the Christian without any question. And such is Sabbath-keeping; for Christ kept the seventh-day Sabbath. IBID
What traditions in particular are we not to keep? "As fundamental errors, we might class with this counterfeit sabbath other errors which Protestants have brought away from the Catholic church, such as sprinkling for baptism, the trinity, the consciousness of the dead and eternal life in misery. The mass who have held these fundamental errors, have doubtless done it ignorantly; but can it be supposed that the church of Christ will carry along with her these errors till the judgment scenes burst upon the world? We think not. “Here are they [in the period of a message given just before the Son of man takes his place upon the white cloud, Revelation 14:14] that keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.” This class, who live just prior to the second advent, will not be keeping the traditions of men, neither will they be holding fundamental errors relative to the plan of salvation through Jesus Christ. And as the true light shines out upon these subjects, and is rejected by the mass, then condemnation will come upon them. When the true Sabbath is set before men, and the claims of the fourth commandment are urged upon them, and they reject this holy institution of the God of heaven, and choose in its place an institution of the beast, it can then be said, in the fullest sense, that such worship the beast. The warning message of the third angel is given in reference to that period, when the mark of the beast will be received, instead of the seal of the living God. Solemn dreadful, swiftly-approaching hour! Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, Sept. 12, 1854, Pg.36.7
